Smoothies,
when made with the right ingredients, can be the most delicious,
nutritious, energizing drinks on the planet. And homemade smoothies
are the best! You can throw anything in smoothies and shakes, from
frozen or fresh fruits and berries, to some vegetables, ice, dairy,
green superfood powder blends, flaxseeds or flaxseed oil, nuts like
almonds, peanut butter, accents like cinnamon and honey, etc. Go crazy
with experimenting! It may take a little trial and error, but once you
find something that fits your palate, you’ll get addicted! As with
juicing, there are tons of smoothie recipes out there. Just go surf
the web and see what you come across. Start with a basic recipe, then
add your own flair until you find the perfect combo for you.
One of my favorite smoothie recipes includes a half banana, small scoop of whole milk yogurt, raw milk, a few ice cubes, a frozen acai berry smoothie pack, a teaspoon of honey, a couple strawberries, almonds and ground flaxseeds, and a scoop of GREEN FOOD powder blend. Talk about a delicious, nutritious powerhouse! You may have heard of acai, the Amazon’s antioxidant super berry. Sambazaon has the best organic acai smoothie mixes. They’re the first company to establish a fully organic, certified free trade supply chain of acai from Brazil to the US. Their smoothie packs are available at health food stores and online at sambazon.com. Green superfoods made with super-rich organic wheat grasses and barley grasses are available at Harvestnutrition.com.
A good blender for quickly crushing ice and blending soft and frozen fruits is an Oster 8 Speed 450watt blender (like model BCCG08) with ice crushing blade, retailing for around $40 - 50. Something in this class will serve most of your smoothie needs. However, if you want to take it to the ultimate level and be able to blend anything and everything, including hard vegetables, and make perfectly smooth shakes smoothies in a few split seconds, check out vitamix.com or blendtec.com. Both brands offer consumer grade versions of their world-renowned blenders starting at about $400. I got the $50 Oster for a wedding gift, and it works great for what I need.
Drink smoothies often as a breakfast, snack or quick pick me up, or dessert. They can be easy on digestion, while giving you a super natural energy buzz, and powerful dose of whole food nutrition.
